About Nu Mu Lambda

Nu Mu Lambda, the second oldest alumni chapter in the Metropolitan Atlanta area, was established by thirty-seven brothers who felt that the spirit of Alpha needed to spread to the suburbs of Atlanta.  In the late 1970s, many African-American families were moving into DeKalb County, creating economic and social growth in Decatur and surrounding cities.  In 1979, Alpha men living in DeKalb County recognized an opportunity to make an impact in their immediate community and they began the process to form a new chapter.

On June 15, 1980, the Nu Mu Lambda chapter was established and since its inception, has continued to spread the light of Alpha, not only in the Decatur area, but also throughout DeKalb County and beyond.  Known as the “DeKalb Alphas,” brothers work to serve the needs of the community, from providing youth mentorship to advocating for voter registration rights.

Through the DeKalb Alphas Mentoring Initiative, young males from 3rd grade through 12th grade are exposed to a yearlong series of enrichments, social activities, and seminars that promote academic excellence and social responsibility.  The program culminates with a Beautillion, in which high school seniors partake in a rites-of-passage ceremony to transition them into manhood. 

The chapter received the National Alumni Chapter of the Year Award in 2001, 2002, and 2003 while programs such as the Wellness Day Challenge, the Wesley Club, and the ‘Get Out the Vote’ Flash Mobs have been recognized at the local, regional, and national level.  Nu Mu Lambda is the advising chapter for the Mu Alpha chapter at Emory University and the Upsilon Omicron chapter at Oglethorpe University.  The chapter received the National Charles H. Wesley Award, which recognizes joint initiatives between alumni and college chapters, consecutively from 2000 to 2010.

In 2006, the DeKalb Alphas represented a coalition of Georgia and national groups in a lawsuit challenging a Georgia State Election Board regulation which severely restricted the ability of private groups conducting voter registration drives.  In the case ACORN v. Cox, a federal judge granted an injunction blocking enforcement of the regulation.  The chapter also represented the Charles H. Wesley Education Foundation in a similar suit in 2004, after the Georgia Secretary of State rejected a group of applications collected by brothers at a voter registration drive.

Nu Mu Lambda is a life member of the NAACP, participates in the March of Dimes Walk America, AIDS Walk Atlanta, is a member of the DeKalb Chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and contributed over $40,000 to the MLK National Memorial Project. With a roster of over 100 members, Nu Mu Lambda is the second largest chapter in Georgia and represents brothers from every part of the professional world, including business, education, finance, law, medicine, military, public service, religion, and recent college graduates.
